NSW Gov't: "Cant beat them? Legislate against them"


International students will now be officially discriminated against in NSW. A recent Administrative Decisions Tribunal case found that the Nsw government is discriminating against international students on the grounds of race by denying them public transport concessions available to other full time students. The NSW’s response is to change the laws to make this

discrimination legal. Comments by Transport Minister Watkins such as those published in the Daily Telegraph on May 20th about international students are grossly misleading and the National Liaison Committee calls for an apology by the Daily Telegraph and the Minister for such ill-informed statements.

The National Liaison Committee for International Students in Australia calls to all international students to show support of the National Day Of Action for all Students across Australia tomorrow  April 12th.

Rallies in major capital cities tomorrow are being held to protest the effects of the implementation of the VSU legislation which is continuously causing the closure and downsizing of vital student services and lowering of standards of support and welfare for students in all Australian universities

  Travel concession discrimination case finalized: NSW Government - GUILTY

The decision of a four year old case in the NSW Administrative Decisions Tribunal has seen victory for all international students in New South Wales today. A case lodged in 2002 against the NSW Transport Minister, Director General of the Department of Transport and the providers of Pubic Transport in NSW has at last determined that denying full time international students concession fares on Public Transport in NSW is discriminatory on the grounds of race.

NLC Acting National Convenor, Ms Song Yee NG says, “although it was a case for three individual students and the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association, it is a victory for all international students that is long overdue.”

VSU Effect On International Student Numbers PDF Print E-mail
International student numbers are set to decrease in all universities if the current form of the VSU bill is implemented by the end of the year. The National Liaison Committee is extremely concerned that with the  introduction of the VSU bill, there will be an enormous reduction in services and support for international students on Australian university campuses and the education experiences for all current students will be badly affected.
