Condolences for balcony-fall couple
Written by Leesha McKenny and Georgina Robinson | The Sydney Morning Herald

The first-floor room at Taylors College in Waterloo used to be a classroom.

But this week it became a condolence room, taken over by messages and tributes from the classmates and friends of two students who fell 25 metres from their third-floor Waterloo apartment after being attacked by an intruder.

Propped up against the whiteboard amid flowers was a smiling photo of Liao "Elva" Wei, 18, who fell to her death.

On a nearby school desk was an open card for her boyfriend, Tae Wook "Chris" Han, 19, who remains in hospital with serious injuries from his fall.

"I can't believe this happened to you," a note read. "I am so sorry that it happened to you, out of all people ... it never should have been this way."

The notes mentioned Ms Wei's sweet nature. "[You were] always smiling good naturedly in our law and government class in 2007," one read.

Teachers at the school, which they had both attended since September last year, remember them as diligent students.

"Dear Chris," said another message. "Please be strong, I hope you recover soon."

Amid a table of paper cranes was a collection of letters addressed to Ms Wei's parents, who were awaiting visas for travel to Australia in Shanghai and were reportedly devastated by the death of their only daughter.

A student at the college said Ms Wei wanted to return to China when the family's home was destroyed in the Sichuan earthquake earlier this year.

But a teacher told Ms Wei she should stay in Australia "because it's safer", the student said.

Managing director of Study Group Australasia, Peter Price, said the school's security had been stepped up as a precaution since the attack.

"We haven't had a crime of this nature in this area before, so we're obviously stunned," he said.

"We're also working with local landlords to ensure there's an additional level of security facilities in place."

Mr Price said the two students who were also in the apartment with Ms Wei and Mr Han had been placed in secure housing and had seen counsellors.

"We've also made contact with their parents," he said.

Mr Price said they student body had pulled together since the attack and expressed wishes to hold a memorial. A sign on the wall reminded all visitors to the room that there were counselling services available at the welfare office.

"We can take care of you," it read.
